Who are you, where did you grow up. what do you do?
My name is Chiyo Hartley, I grew up in the Bay Area and am on my 10th year in LA. I started modeling 5 years ago after getting scouted by my agency Photogenics. 1.5 years ago, my sister and I opened the doors to our Coffee and Retail shop called SACHI.LA.
Tell us the inspiration behind putting up Sachi?
We were really inspired by our family. We grew up bringing our family's favorite vanilla nut roasted coffee to Japan every time we went to visit(and still do). From there came an ongoing joke of starting a coffee business. My sister and I are big believers in community, happiness and positivity so we have always dreamed about having a space where we could promote those values. My sister's green thumb was also passed down from our grandparents in Japan who were farmers. Having and selling houseplants in the shop is my favorite addition and adds to the atmosphere.
Why Mar Vista, what do you love about the neighborhood?
We are actually in a little pocket called Del Rey! We were living in Mar Vista when we found our spot and wanted something close to us that had a nice neighborhood feel and was in need of a coffeeshop. We love our location and the surrounding community.
Your locals guide to Mar Vista/Venice/Palms (food, drink, anything Mar Vista!)
We love our immediate neighbors -
Pepe's Tacos. They have our favorite burritos, tacos and my favorite - chicken soup.
Pepe's Thrift. Right across the street from us, always has amazing vintage furniture. We got some of our shop furniture from there.
Sakura is a great Japanese restaurant and Sushi spot!
Good Dirt is the cutest ceramic studio. We have done some collaborations with their ceramicists as well.
And of course we always love the Mar Vista Farmer's Market!
